Well, hoodie, actually. This project ended up being the source of many lessons. I had never crocheted an article of clothing straight from my brain without the benefit of a pattern. I bought a few balls of Caron Simply Soft in Pagoda and Ocean and wanted to make something using both colours, since they were both so sublime. I don’t know what possessed me to choose a hoodie rather than a simple sweater – a moment of insanity, perhaps. And I kept waffling about how to actually create this. Zipper? Buttons? Pullover? What kind of pockets? I was still pondering how to make parts of it while I was crocheting it.
I started out winging it, but had to back-up and start from scratch after some pretty spectacular mis-calculations. Then I decided to treat it like any other garment, draw up a pattern and simply crochet those shapes. I couldn’t decide how to do the sleeves – my fourth try ended up being pretty much what I wanted. (Note to self: unless you want straight sleeves, crochet them horizontally rather than length-wise.) Now that I look back on it, I probably should have documented everything in the off-chance I wanted to create a pattern for this, but so much of this project was spent deciding what I wanted to do while I was doing it and unraveling and re-doing. At any rate, here’s the result.
I can’t recall how many balls of yarn I used – three ocean and two pagoda, if memory serves. And an H/5mm hook. This picture doesn’t quite convey the splendiferousness of the colours. They really are sublime.
