I’ve crocheted a number of cowls, but they’ve been either wide eternity scarves or the not-quite-a-foot-in-diameter variety. But I’ve always wanted to do a cowl that could be used as a hood without being doubled-up. But none of my searches ever came up with a pattern for one of these, so I decided to make my own.
It ended up being a lot tougher than I thought it was going to be. I had an idea of what I wanted the wide and narrow end diameters to be, but what to do in the middle? Do I just make a gradually-narrowing tube? Or do I narrow it at the bottom third and do the rest of it in the one diameter? After three attempts, I decided to take as my inspiration the sort of cowls I saw in Robin Hood movies. Working that out took a couple of tries, but eventually, I got the desired result, which I’ve named the Sherwood Forest Cowl.
I did this project using an H/5mm hook and three skeins of Lion Brand Jeans yarn. I’ve been using that a lot lately; I really enjoy the feel of it. I do have one more project that will feature this yarn, so stay tuned!
The cowl as hood, in case I want to skulk in the forest incognito.
Or down, in case I just want to ponder that “steal from the rich and give to the poor” concept. (Apologies for the lighting, which is not kind…)
