This was a project inspired by Pinterest (the cause of much inspiration for many). I had pondered doing this for some time, but somehow had never gotten around to it. But just for yucks, I decided to give it a try. And discovered that although crocheting around rocks is a challenge, it’s not all that difficult.
First, you’ve got to get some thin yarn; I used DMC Baroque, which is a mercerized cotton, and a 2.25 mm hook. I’ve also seen ones done with lace-weight yarn. But fuzzy acrylics are just going to look weird, so don’t go there.
Second, it’s just a case of expansion, then contraction. You start with a magic circle, then start building on it and adding stitches; then you place your circle over the rock and start decreasing stitches until the work is secure around the rock (and yes, this part is a bit awkward). I watched a couple of videos and then started fiddling with my own designs. The results:
