My flurry of holiday crocheting included three types of items I’ve never attempted to make before. And I wanted to make another useful household item – two of them, really: one for each parent. And what could be more useful than a crocheted basket? Okay – there are a lot more useful things, but for crocheted items, baskets are way up there in terms of utility.
For my mum, I wanted to make something as decorative as it was useful. I searched through dozens of patterns and settled on this one:
This was my original reason for buying the Bernat Maker Home Dec yarn (which worked so well in the market bag project). Crocheting around millinery wire was a bit of a pain, but necessary. I decided to forgo the handles, since this basket would ultimately be for… storing yarn. I made it taller and narrower than the pattern.

After this project, I got the hang of how to crochet a basket, so I made this very sturdy one for my stepdad, out of Bernat Softee Chunky yarn. I did put handles on it so he can carry things around with it. It’s meant to be purely functional, rather than decorative.
