Two skeins – three items

I really hope two particular friends don’t know about this blog (I’m pretty sure they don’t) because they’re about to get some gifts from me.  These are so overdue; I’ve been meaning to make them something for ages but couldn’t settle on what until I made a cowl for another friend with Lion Brand Scarfie yarn.  I used the same pattern as the one in this post https://onthehook.home.blog/2019/12/21/inspired-cowl/

For Linda, I did the same cowl:

I considered making the same for Anu using a different colour, but put the kybosh on that pretty quickly.  Anu hikes in the hills behind her house, so a tall cowl that could double as a hood wouldn’t be the best thing.  But a hat and smaller cowl could be worn on a crisp weather hike.

I used this pattern as the inspiration for the cowl:

Landon Slouch and Scarf (Adult and Child Sizes)

But instead of chaining 192 for a long scarf, I chained 76 and worked from there to create the cowl using the mini bean stitch.  The resulting cowl was three inches narrower and a third shorter than Linda’s.

I used the rest of the skein to make the hat.  After looking at various patterns, I decided to go relatively simple and just come up with my own design:

Main part of the hat:
NOTE: do not flip this between rows. And allow for at least a 12″ tail of yarn before chaining (to close up the top part of the hat).
– Ch 74, join with a slip stitch to the first chain.
– Row 1-3 Ch 2, HDC 74, join with a slip stitch to the first stitch.
– Row 4 Ch 2, HDC BLO 74, join with a slip stitch to the first stitch.
– Repeat this five more times.
– Do three more HDC rows, but no HDC BLO row. Join with a slip stitch to the first stitch, secure and weave in the bottom end.
– Use the beginning tail of yarn to stitch the top of the hat together.

Band:
– Ch 10
– Ch 2, HDC 10
– Ch 2, HDC BL0 10
– Repeat this for a total of 60 rows (or until it fits comfortably when slightly stretched)
– Leave a generous (2x length) tail of yarn and use this to close the strip to create a loop and secure it to the main part of the hat.

With very little yarn to spare, I was able to do both hat and cowl with the one skein!

NOTE:  I used a 6.5mm hook for all three of these.
